Only A Word(copyright law /calligraphy/Lu)I: Strong
Li Dongtao
The written word is my way.
This is a case about “Written Word”.
“健”is a Chinese character means strong and is written in “Lu” style of the traditional Chinese calligraphy.
Chinese characters and the “Lu” calligraphy have been invented for over 2,000 years.
According to the copyright law, the relevant strokes of the writing style “Lu” are in the public domain and not copyrightable now.
The word “健” can be written by anyone: my way, your way, his way…
But if a different person puts this word on a piece of white paper with an ink-soaked writing-brush, then the result is different and the work does exist.
Only A Word(copyright law /calligraphy/Lu)II: infringement
Li Dongtao
Over 20 years ago, the word “健” was written by a Chinese calligraphist and published in his book.
Afterwards, this word was used in an ad for a bodybuilding program invented by a bodybuilding club.
After the calligraphist brought the case of copyright infringement to court, the bodybuilding club mediated with him quickly and let him withdrew the case.
Only A Word(copyright law /calligraphy/Lu)III:AI Can
Li Dongtao
The most dangerous enemy
is that which no one fears.
AI can gather millions upon millions data online.
AI can choose data freely.
AI can work by identifying and replicating patterns in data.
AI can “write” a “健” in “Lu” style in a second.
Powerful, also a big problem:
How to prevent AI models from learning a particular calligraphist’s style?
If this problem couldn’t be solved, then calligraphists will be replaced by models.
Enemy at the gates.
